What is the Registered Apprenticeship?

Our Registered Apprenticeship (RA) program provides structured education and training to caregivers seeking a fulfilling and long-term career as a Direct Support Professional. Over the course of two years, participants will work with a mentor as they complete education-based coursework, on-the-job training, and an apprenticeship. Participants not only benefit from a comprehensive, evidence-based educational model, they also receive competitive wages that increase as they move through the program. We believe that appropriate compensation, accesses to education, and better benefits will make for better, more reliable caregivers.

Addressing the Caregiver Shortage

The RA program is designed to address the current caregiver crisis negatively affecting our state and country. Research shows that a lack of training, low wages, and poor benefits are the primary contributing factors to our caregiver shortage. The goal of our Registered Apprenticeship program is to provide aspiring caregivers with a clear and directed pathway to becoming a Direct Support Professional that includes effective training, a higher wage standard, and benefits package. In doing so, we aim to increase the quality of service provided by caregivers and decrease the industry’s turnover rate.

Our Training Team

Our RA participants are paired with an experienced journey worker/mentor that will provide guidance throughout the program. Our participants also work with our Training and Career Coordinator, meeting monthly to evaluate progress, needs, and address questions to ensure they are receiving the support they need.

Getting Started with the Registered Apprenticeship Program

After you’ve expressed interest in our Registered Apprenticeship Program our Training and Career Coordinator will meet with you to go over our program syllabus. Together, we’ll review our expectations and related instruction curriculum scope and sequence. You’ll also learn about your expected skill development and we’ll define our required meeting schedule. At the start of the program, you’ll be paired with an experienced mentor to help you on your journey to becoming a Direct Support Professional.

How Our Registered Apprenticeship Program Works

Typically, during the onboarding process, a new apprentice will meet with their assigned journey worker/mentor and receive a binder containing pertinent program information. Our Training and Career Coordinator meets regularly with the apprentice to evaluate progress, training progression and needs, and to address their questions or concerns. Each week, an apprentice has a certain number of related instruction and on-the-job training hours. The apprentice also completes quarterly progress reviews with their journey worker/mentor and our Training and Career Coordinator. As apprentices develop their skillset, their mentor will sign off on the trained skill, allowing them to move forward in the program. If any issues arise during the program, our Training and Career Coordinator will work with the apprentice to develop a solution. After key review periods, apprentices are eligible for a wage increase to match their progress.
